What AI can help you do
Recognize the difference between an AI suggestion and a checked fact.
Artificial intelligence is a broad name for software that handles tasks such as recognizing speech, finding patterns, or producing text. Many modern systems learn patterns from examples. A model is the part that has learned those patterns; an app gives you a way to use it. ChatGPT and Claude are conversational tools: you describe what you want, and they produce a response.
Start with something you can judge yourself. You might organize a packing list, shorten a paragraph you wrote, or ask for three ways to begin a hobby project. The useful question is whether the result helps with your task. A polished answer can still include a mistake or an invented detail. Keep your own judgment in the process, especially when a claim depends on information you have not supplied.
Try it yourself
- Choose one ordinary task: organize a list, rewrite a short note, or brainstorm a small project.
- Write down what a helpful result would contain, without opening an AI app yet.
- Name one detail you could check yourself and one the assistant could not know unless you supplied it.
You’re ready to move on when…
- You can name a useful AI task and describe what a successful result would look like.
- You can explain why a confident sentence is not enough to establish that it is true.
